Albert Memmi (1920-2020) im Gespräch mit Christoph Burgmer. Der
tunesisch-französische Autor, Essayist und Wissenschaftler Albert
Memmi gehört zu den einflussreichsten Rassismusforschern unserer
Zeit. In unserem Gespräch versucht er, den "Rassisten", seine
Motivationen, Triebkräfte und Merkmale zu beschreiben. Rassismus
ist für Albert Memmi an erster Stelle weder ein theoretisches
soziales Konstrukt noch eine kapitalistische Ideologie: Vielmehr
beschreibt Albert Memmi Rassismus auf der individuellen Ebene.
Welchen direkten persönlichen Vorteil hat der Einzelne davon,
andere Menschen zu diskriminieren und rassistisch abzuwerten?
Albert Memmis Erläuterungen, das Gespräch wurde schon 1998 in
Paris aufgenommen, sind angesichts der Akzeptanz zutiefst
rassistischer Parteien durch Teile der Bevölkerung in Europa, wie
insbesondere in Deutschland, aktueller denn je.

Burgmer. The Tunisian-French author, essayist and scholar Albert
Memmi is one of the most influential researchers on racism of our
time. In our conversation, he attempts to describe the ‘racist’,
their motivations, driving forces and characteristics. For Albert
Memmi, racism is, first and foremost, neither a theoretical
social construct nor a capitalist ideology; rather, Albert Memmi
describes racism at the individual level. What direct personal
benefit does the individual derive from discriminating against
and racially devaluing other people? Albert Memmi’s explanations
– the conversation was recorded in Paris as far back as 1998 –
are more relevant than ever, given the acceptance of deeply
racist parties by sections of the population in Europe,
particularly in Germany.

Burgmer. Auteur, essayiste et chercheur franco-tunisien, Albert
Memmi compte parmi les spécialistes du racisme les plus influents
de notre époque. Au cours de notre entretien, il tente de décrire
le « raciste », ses motivations, ses pulsions et ses
caractéristiques. Pour Albert Memmi, le racisme n’est avant tout
ni une construction sociale théorique, ni une idéologie
capitaliste. Albert Memmi décrit plutôt le racisme au niveau
individuel. Quel avantage personnel direct l'individu tire-t-il à
discriminer et à dénigrer racialement d'autres personnes ? Les
explications d'Albert Memmi – l'entretien a été enregistré dès
1998 à Paris – sont plus que jamais d'actualité, compte tenu de
l'acceptation de partis profondément racistes par une partie de
la population en Europe, notamment en Allemagne.
