Stefan Fuchs (Wisssenschaftsjournalist) blickt zurück auf die
Diktatur des António de Oliveira Salazar. Das kleine Portugal
erlebte mit dem "Estado Novo" die am längsten andauernde
faschistische Diktatur in Europa. Sie begann mit einemn
Militärputsch 1926 und endete mit der Nelkenrevolution 1974. Am
Ende des Estado Novo waren 32 Prozent der Portugiesen
Analphabeten, das durchschnittliche jährliche Pro-Kopf Einkommen
betrug 160,- US $ und die Sterblichkeitsrate Neugeborener war die
höchste Europas. In der Gegenwart versucht die rechtsradikale und
rassistische  "Chega Partei" des Juristen und ehemaligen
Finanzbeamten André Ventura an die faschistische Tradition des
Estado Novo anzuknüpfen.

Ela começou com um golpe militar em 1926 e terminou com a
"Revolução dos Cravos" em 1974. No final do Estado Novo, 32% dos
portugueses eram analfabetos, o rendimento médio anual per capita
era de 160 dólares americanos e a taxa de mortalidade neonatal
era a mais alta da Europa. Atualmente, o partido de extrema
direita e racista «Chega», do advogado e ex-funcionário público
André Ventura, tenta dar continuidade à tradição fascista do
Estado Novo.


/ Stefan Fuchs (science journalist) looks back on the
dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar. With the ‘Estado
Novo’, little Portugal experienced the longest-lasting fascist
dictatorship in Europe. It began with a military coup in 1926 and
ended with the Carnation Revolution in 1974. At the end of the
Estado Novo, 32 percent of the Portuguese population was
illiterate, the average annual per capita income was US$160, and
the infant mortality rate was the highest in Europe. In the
present day, the right-wing extremist and racist Chega Party, led
by lawyer and former tax official André Ventura, is attempting to
revive the fascist tradition of the Estado Novo.
