Koffein oder vielleicht sogar etwas Ritalin vor der nächsten Klausur? Der Versuch, mit vermeintlich leistungssteigernden Substanzen die Erfolgsaussichten etwa bei Prüfungen zu verbessern, wird als Neuroenhancement bezeichnet. Damit ist der Einsatz medizinischer Maßnahmen gemeint, z. B. eben Substanzeinnahme oder auch Neurotechnologie, die darauf abzielen, die kognitiven oder motorischen Fähigkeiten oder auch einfach die Stimmung zu verbessern. In den letzten Jahren hat man das immer wieder gehört, was natürlich schnell den Eindruck erzeugt, die Gesellschaft sei schon voller Neuroenhancer. Ist das aber wirklich so? Wie verbreitet ist Neuroenhancement in der Gesellschaft? Und wie gefährlich ist die Nutzung dieser Maßnahmen? Zu diesen und vielen weiteren Fragen rund um die Thematik hat im ZiF ein Workshop stattgefunden mit dem Titel „Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Neuroenhancement: Current Developments and Impact on the Individual and Society“, geleitet vom Sozialwissenschaftler Guido Mehlkop, der Philosophin Saskia Nagel und dem Soziologen Sebastian Sattler, die in dieser Folge über die Realitäten des Neuroenhancements sprechen. In the last few years, the rise of right-wing populist and right-wing extremist parties, politicians, movements, and groups has become a common phenomenon, contributing to the spread of far-right discourse and attitudes. And it’s getting worse, as we currently see in Germany, Austria, the U.S. etc. A research group at ZiF has worked on this topic for two years under the title “Normalizing the Far Right”. In this episode, Paula Diehl and Birgit Sauer, the convenors of the research group, talk about the different developments, the danger of normalization of right-wing positions, and about the effects on democracy. Weiblich gelesene Personen interessieren sich nicht für Technik, männlich gelesene sind nicht so einfühlsam und kluge Menschen tragen immer Brillen. Stereotype begegnen uns in vielen unterschiedlichen Situationen und sind häufig vor allem sehr langlebig, wie die hartnäckigen Vorurteile gegenüber Blondinen. Woher kommt das Bedürfnis, Menschen nach Kategorien sortieren zu wollen, die häufig in Stereotypen münden? Wie entstehen bestimmte Stereotype und wie setzen sie sich durch? Aus welchen unterschiedlichen Perspektiven kann man sie in wissenschaftlicher Hinsicht betrachten?  Darum geht es in dieser Folge im Gespräch mit Benjamin Paaßen aus der Informatik, mit dem Schwerpunkt KI in der Bildung, mit Rima-Maria Rahal aus der Psychologie mit dem Schwerpunkt Entscheidungsfindung, und mit der Soziologin Nadine Zwiener-Collins mit dem Schwerpunkt Politik und Geschlecht. One subject we always think about at ZiF is how to support our fellows and their work in the best ways possible since they have to combine all their different disciplinary backgrounds, methods and research cultures in a few months of working together. To come to terms with these differences often takes up quite some of the joint research time. How is it possible to avoid more of the frictional losses and the possible dissatisfaction with interdisciplinary work? What kind of maybe more unusual – meaning within the scientific community – methods could be integrated into the framework of the research group to help them make their work as efficient as possible?   For the resident research group “Mapping Evidence to Theory in Ecology: Addressing the Challenges of Generalization and Causality” a special kind of group work process came into being and in this episode research group convenor Tina Heger and the coaches Nora Pfützenreuter and Oliver Szasz talk about this unique experience.
