You've probably heard the phrase, "nothing is certain in this
world except death and taxes." Well, we'd add failure to that
quote. As Albert Einstein noted, "anyone who has never made a
mistake has never tried anything new." Life IS trying new things.
Failure is inevitable. We will all fail at some time, at some
thing. The attempt to avoid failure often robs people of living;
of experiencing new, exciting and unexpected opportunities.
Because they DON'T try new things. DON'T do anything unfamiliar
or that they are not assured will succeed. This narrows the
POSSIBILITIES in life. And people who live this way often find
themselves disenchanted, ruled by fear, and stuck.
Many of the most successful people have shared stories of failure
that helped shape their success and drive. A very famous example
is Michael Jordan sharing the story of being cut from his high
school varsity team and how that motivated him to work hard on
his basketball skills. Many years later he is arguably the
greatest basketball player ever. There are positive things to be
gained and learned from failure.
As therapists in a university setting we see fear of failure
often in our students. Often they DON'T try new things, including
meeting new people and social experience, because of fear of
failure. It is no surprise that someone with this fear of failure
could feel TONS of anxiety in a university setting. University is
about learning. About learning things you DON'T already know. The
belief many students have that they SHOULD already know, SHOULD
have it be easy, SHOULD get all A's is a recipe for FAILURE.
Today on the podcast we talk about failure. How we've failed in
our lives and what we learned. And we encourage others to let go
of the crippling fear of failure and embrace a different mindset.
