Richart Sowa wants to live on his own island, but he does not buy
land. Instead, he builds an island from old plastic bottles he
finds on beaches and in trash around Cancun, Mexico. He puts more
than 100,000 bottles in strong bags to make the island float on the
water. On top, he adds wood, sand, and plants to create a small,
green paradise. Richart grows fruit and vegetables on his island
and uses solar power for energy. He even builds a small house where
he can live and sleep. Many people come to visit and see his
special home. Richart is happy to show that trash can become
something useful and beautiful. In 2005, a hurricane destroys his
first island, but Richart does not give up. He starts again and
builds a new floating island, even stronger than before. Richart’s
island is always changing, with new plants and ideas. He proves
that with creativity and hard work, we can help the planet. His
story teaches us that even things we throw away can have a second
life. Sometimes, a dream starts with just a few empty bottles.
