Das erwartet Sie in der heutigen Episode von Mitgeschnitten (English version below): Anlässlich der Eröffnung des Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society diskutierten Rosalind Morris, Erich Hörl und Daniel Nemenyi das Konzept der "Potentialisierung", einer der Leitbegriffe der LIAS Forschungsprogrammatik. Erich Hörl, Vizepräsident für Forschung und Co-Direktor des LIAS, stellt in der Podiumsdiskussion die Grundzüge des Konzepts vor. Die Alternativlosigkeit, welche die Politik seit den 1970er-Jahren prägt ist, so Hörl, nicht nur der Hintergrund der andauernden Krisenpolitik, die für unsere Zeitcharakteristisch ist, sondern geradezu eine expertokratische Situation, die Möglichkeiten verstellt. Insofern ergeht an die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften die Frage, was sie in dieser Situation offerieren. Hörl bezeichnete dies auch als Aufgabe der Universität. Deutlich wurde, dass die Vorherrschaft des Aktuellen – die Unterordnung des Potentiellen unter das Aktuelle – Potenziale reduziert.  LIAS Fellow Daniel Nemenyi verwies auf einen ähnlichen Gedanken bei Leibniz, nämlich die Idee, dass Potential in dem liegt, was wir nicht voraussehen können und insofern auf das Offene und Unbestimmte im Leben verweist.  Senior Fellow Rosalind Morris, Professorin für Cultural Anthropology, Columbia University, New York betonte für die Geisteswissenschaften den Unterschied zwischen Lernen und Bildung und führte letztere als Argument gegen die Kybernetik an. About this episode of »Mitgeschnitten«: On the occasion of the opening of the Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society, Rosalind Morris, Erich Hörl and Daniel Nemenyi discussed "potentialisation", one of the guiding concepts of the LIAS research programme. In the panel discussion, Erich Hörl, Vice President for Research and Co-Director of LIAS, outlined the concept’s main features .According to Hörl its particular salience lies in its capacity for critical intervention against a politics of no alternatives that has become prevalent since the 1970s and has led to the emergence of a technocratic iron cage that obstructs other possibilities and works to foreclose contestation and resistance. It is in the face of such technocratic regimes of no alternatives that the humanities and social sciences in particular and universities in general are called upon to intervene.  It became clear that the predominance of the current - the subordination of the possible to the status quo - forecloses the potential to think, be and do differently.  LIAS Fellow Daniel Nemenyi referred to a similar idea in Leibniz, namely the idea that potential lies in what we cannot foresee and, in this respect, points to the open and undetermined that is an imminent and essential part of life.  Senior Fellow Rosalind Morris, Professor of Cultural Anthropology, Columbia University, New York emphasised the difference between learning and education for the humanities. While learning emphasises reproductive functionality and the capacity to integrate into existing systems, the latter, she argued, is quite the opposite, a site of critical reflection, understanding, imagination and creativity.

Episode 27: Das erwartet Sie in der heutigen Episode von Mitgeschnitten (English version below): Anlässlich der Eröffnung des Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society spricht Premesh Lalu zum zweiten Leitmotiv der LIAS-Forschungsprogrammatik "Thinking Across Hemispheres". Premesh Lalu, Forschungsprofessor und Gründungsdirektor des Zentrums für geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung an der University of the Western Cape, reflektiert ausgehend von seiner kürzlich erschienenen Monografie „Undoing Apartheid“, dass Geisteswissenschaftler*innen eine Praxis des Denkens jenseits geo-politischen und kulturellen Grenzen wie Nord-Süd oder Ost-West entwickeln. Im Vortrag bezieht er sich auf drei Theaterstücke – Faustus in Africa, Woyzeck on the Highveld und Ubu and the Truth Commission – von William Kentridge, Lesego Rampolokeng, Jane Taylor und der Handspring Puppet Company. Das Theater, so Lalu, biete eine Möglichkeit, über die grundlegenden ‚fictions of race' nachzudenken, die sich in der Apartheid niedergeschlagen haben und in der die Funktionsweise einer sinnlichen Ordnung und ihre gleichzeitige Aufhebung durch eine ästhetische Erziehung, etwa nach Friedrich Schiller offenbart wird. Vor allem aber fordert „Undoing Apartheid“ ein Denken über Hemisphären hinweg, sowohl geopolitisch als auch in Bezug auf Aufteilungen des Sinnlichen. On the occasion of the inauguration of the Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society, Premesh Lalu speaks on the second leitmotif of the LIAS research programme "Thinking Across Hemispheres". Premesh Lalu, research professor and founding director of the Centre for Research in the Humanities at the University of the Western Cape, reflects on his recently published monograph "Undoing Apartheid", that humanities scholars develop a practice of thinking beyond geo-political and cultural boundaries such as North-South or East-West.  In the lecture, he refers to three plays - Faustus in Africa, Woyzeck on the Highveld and Ubu and the Truth Commission - by William Kentridge, Lesego Rampolokeng, Jane Taylor and the Handspring Puppet Company. Theatre, Lalu argues, offers an opportunity to reflect on the fundamental 'fictions of race' that have found expression in apartheid, revealing the workings of a sensual order and its simultaneous suspension through an aesthetic education, such as that of Friedrich Schiller. Above all, "Undoing Apartheid" calls for thinking across hemispheres, both geopolitically and in terms of divisions of the sensual. Following the lecture Paula Banerjee, also a member of the LIAS advisory board, comments on and critically engages with Premesh Lalu’s paper. Susanne Leeb moderates questions from the audience. Juni 2023. Sascha Spoun ordnete das LIAS in den strategischen Gesamtzusammenhang der Universität ein. Erich Hörl und Susanne Leeb, Co-Direktoren des LIAS, stellten die Grundzüge der LIAS-Forschungsprogrammatik entlang der zentralen Begriffe "Potentialisierung" und "Thinking Accross Hemispheres" vor. Erste Werkstattberichte gaben Einblick in die Arbeit und ihren Impact: So berichtete Lydia Radoli vom ersten „LIAS Interventions: In Media“ am Nachmittag im Zusammenhang mit ihrem Forschungsprojekt „The Visual Witnessing of Trauma Phenomena Among Journalists: An Analysis of Various Media Images from East Africa“. Sie erforscht darin die Folgen und Bedingungen der Traumatisierung von Bild- und Filmjournalisten. Der Workshop brachte eingeladene Journalist*innen in eine vertiefte Diskussion mit neuester Forschung.
