"When you work with people in Vanuatu, you come with a
history."

In this episode, we present three interviews about linguistic
fieldwork and the social and sociolinguistic situation in
Vanuatu. We speak with

* Carol Aru. She is an expert for the languages of Vanuatu.
Bislama and another of the local languages are her mother
tongues. In addition to her linguistic expertise, Carol paints
for us a vivid picture of the social status of Bislama, the
language policies of Vanuatu, and its interactions with the
educational system.
* Jocelyn Aznar, whose work is dedicated to the links between
language, culture, and identity. In his PhD project he
investigated Nisvaie, one of the 30-odd languages spoken on the
island of Malekula in Vanuatu.
* Professor Miriam Meyerhoff, from the All Souls College of the
University of Oxford. She discusses the functioning of language
registers in non-standardized languages, highlighting their
similarity to more standardized languages.
