Digital technologies can help get us meet the IPCC goal of
net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Typically technology is only
considered from an emissions-producing viewpoint. Computers need
electricity, and in most cases using electricity means creating
carbon emissions. But what's not often considered is the impact
that digital technologies could have in reducing emissions in
other sectors. One estimate suggests that it could reduce global
carbon emissions by 15% by the year 2030. So here today to talk
with us about using digital technologies to achieve
sustainability goals is Michelle Lancaster, director of
sustainability partnerships at Microsoft. Not only does Microsoft
have a plan to be carbon neutral, but it plans to erase all of
its historical emissions too.
