Book Presentation and Talk with Paul Thomas

[17.07.2019]

The current publication »Quantum Art and Uncertainty« by Paul
Thomas is based on the basic idea that the two forces
»probability« and »uncertainty« are at the center of art and
science.

Paul Thomas is Professor at the UNSW Art and Design School in
Sydney and Director of the Studio for Interdisciplinary Art
Research. Based on Thomas' book »Quantum Art and Uncertainty«,
the lecture deals with the use of art as a visual and cultural
instrument to investigate the invisible quantum world. Art serves
as a tool to make the invisible visible. To achieve this, Paul
Thomas uses scientifically collected information and translates
the data so that humans can visually perceive it.

Modern concepts for the visualization of phenomena such as
quantum chaos, quantum computers and quantum consciousness show
that our cultural understanding has changed. From everyday life
we know the relationship between cause and effect, but this
causality contradicts quantum physics. Such insights require new
ways of thinking and thus also influence the perception of our
reality. The liminal space between the quantum world and the
classical world creates an impression of the atomic connections
that make up our world.
