We're celebrating 20 years of eucrim— the academic journal that's often been described as the 'instruction manual' of European criminal law.


Putting together a journal for 20 years requires a lot of time, energy, and most importantly talented personnel. Behind the scenes there are a dozen colleagues at the Institute working to ensure that eucrim comes out on time each quarter — from the editors who shape each issue's focus, to the translators who render complex legal concepts across multiple languages, to the proofreaders who ensure every citation is airtight. It is a labor of precision, patience, and genuine passion for the subject matter. Today, three of them sit down to discuss the journal — what it takes to produce it, how it has evolved over the years, and why, after 20 years, the work still feels as important as ever.

Das Anwerben von kampfbereiten Fremden ist so alt wie der Krieg selbst. Man denke an etwa an die Seeräuber und ihre Kaperbriefe, die Schweizergarde, die den Papst bewacht, oder die russische Wagner-Gruppe.


Vordergründig bringt die Auslagerung von Militärdienstleistungen an Private viele Vorteile: Sie sind schnell verfügbar, oft hochspezialisiert und ihr Einsatz muss nicht vor der Öffentlichkeit und den Parlamenten rechtfertig werden. Zugleich aber wirft ihr Einsatz ethische und rechtliche Fragen auf, denn für die oft in Grauzonen operierenden Firmen gibt es keine verbindlichen Regulierungen.


In der neuen Folge von Doing Time, Talking Crime erläutert die Juristin Sarah Katharina Stein die Gefahren, die durch den Einsatz privater Militärdienstleister entstehen, und erklärt, warum für die Bundesregierung gerade jetzt ein guter Zeitpunkt wäre, das Thema aufs Tableau zu bringen.

Christopher Murphy is joined by Rafael Dalla Barba from the Institute's Department of Public Law. Rafael is particularly interested in exploring whether and how legal hermeneutics and metaethics can contribute to understanding the adjudication of so-called hard cases in law.
