Why did humans quietly agree, across every culture and every age,
that the right hand would lead?
In this History for Sleep episode from Sleepy Time History, we
drift through nearly two million years of clues to explore why
around 90% of humans are right-handed — a striking asymmetry that
sets us apart from other great apes, who split closer to 50/50.
Gently, we follow the evidence: tooth scratches on an early Homo
jaw, Oldowan stone-tool marks, the twist of ancient skulls and
brains, Neanderthal arm bones and teeth, and the ghostly shadows
of left hands on cave walls. All of it whispering the same story
about handedness, brain asymmetry, language, and the mysterious
9:1 right-hand bias.
If you like calm, slow storytelling and deep-time anthropology,
this video is designed to help you unwind, relax, and fall asleep
while learning about human evolution, genetics, and the strange
history of right- and left-handedness.
Settle in, let your hands go still, and let Sleepy Time History
walk you back through deep time.
If this kind of soothing sleep history helps you drift off,
please subscribe to Sleepy Time History so you don’t miss future
bedtime journeys into the past.

Note on Process & Accuracy:
Every story on this channel begins with a deep respect for
history. We act as directors and editors, using AI tools to help
research and draft the script while we shape the narrative and
verify facts. The narration comes from a digital replica of a
professional voice actor, and the images are individually crafted
artistic impressions using AI. Even with these tools, creating a
story of this depth still takes hours of work.
Please note that while the narrative is thoroughly based on
historical research, its primary purpose is storytelling for
entertainment and relaxation. As such, it is not intended to be
used as a formal academic or scientific source. Thank you for
your trust and support.
