On a lonely rural highway after midnight, red and blue lights
appear in the rearview mirror where no patrol car should be.
There are no side roads, no ramps, no headlights approaching from
behind — only the soft glow of a dashboard, the hum of tires on
asphalt, and a distant siren that somehow sounds far away even
when it is directly behind you.
This calm SCP sleep-story follows Dr. Miriam Vale, Dr. Elena
Marr, Agent Caleb Voss, and MTF Theta-9 “Veilkeepers” as the
Foundation reopens the file on SCP-973, “Smokey” — an impossible
highway patrol anomaly that stops drivers on an abandoned stretch
of road and issues citations for violations no human traffic code
has ever written.
Some drivers vanish. Some return shaken and unable to explain
what happened. Some are released with tickets written in
ash-colored ink. One citation reads failure to remember the last
exit. Another warns against attempted continuation past permitted
roadway. At first, the Foundation treats SCP-973 as a hostile
road anomaly: a haunted patrol car, a shadowed officer, and a
traffic stop that no one should obey. But Dr. Vale begins to
notice something strange in the survivor reports. SCP-973 may not
be chasing drivers simply to punish them. It may be stopping them
before they reach something worse farther down the highway.
As the investigation unfolds through dashcam recordings,
abandoned gas station interviews, old highway maps, survivor
statements, and Foundation convoy logs, the road itself begins to
feel alive. Mile markers repeat. Exits vanish. Fog gathers over
the asphalt. Radio stations dissolve into static. Headlights
appear in mirrors even when the road behind the vehicle is empty.
And beyond Mile Marker 44, the Foundation discovers signs of a
second, deeper anomaly — a stretch of highway no driver seems to
return from.
Agent Voss believes SCP-973 is dangerous and should be avoided
completely. Dr. Marr suspects the anomaly is drawn to tired,
distracted, angry, grieving, or overconfident drivers — people
who stop paying attention to the road as a real place and begin
treating it as empty space between where they were and where they
want to be. Dr. Vale begins to suspect the strangest possibility
of all: SCP-973 may be dangerous, cruel, and impossible to trust,
but it may also be the last thing on that road capable of making
anyone stop.
This episode plays over a fully black screen so you can set your
phone down, close your eyes, and drift into deep, uninterrupted
sleep without screen light filling the room. It is built for calm
nighttime listening, dark-room rest, and a slow SCP sleep-story
experience where the fear comes from lonely highways, repeating
signs, fog, headlights, and the quiet question of what waits past
the last place you were allowed to turn around.
What to expect: calm documentary narration, slow pacing, eerie
highway atmosphere, Foundation field logs, recovered dashcam
audio, strange traffic citations, abandoned roads, SCP-973
containment review, no sudden noises, no loud jump scares, and a
quiet ending designed to fade like distant patrol lights in the
fog.
