Water-related disasters like drought and torrential rains have
multiplied and intensified during recent years, with severe
consequences for people and the economy. The resulting effects
are closely linked to land and water management. Europe’s
freshwater and coastal ecosystems are in poor health following
decades of overexploitation, degradation and pollution, thereby
limiting the services – including drought and flood risk
mitigation – that they can provide. However, government responses
have often focused on maintaining the status quo rather than
addressing the root causes of the crisis. We would love to get
into an exchange with you about ways to put pressure on EU
institutions to make sure the Water Resilience Strategy truly
delivers. In this session, we will provide an overview of EU
initiatives on water resilience, the view from environmental
civil society organisations, as well as reflect on opportunities
and risks.
