There are many examples for us in scripture but I want to start
with two verses in Proverbs 18.
Proverbs 18:20,21
A man's stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his
mouth; from the produce of his lips he shall be filled.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who
love it will eat its fruit.
Mark 11:22-24
So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in
God.
For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be
removed and cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart,
but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have
whatever he says.
Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray,
believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
With the previous lessons in mind, I moved to the Old Testament
and a familiar passage and story. In the next two episodes, I
will use the story of David and Goliath to illustrate the power
of your words.
The story is found in 1 Samuel 17:8-10
Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to
them, "Why have you come out to lineup for battle? Am I not a
Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for
yourselves, and let him come down to me.
If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your
servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you
shall be our servants and serve us."
And the Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel this day
give me a man, that we may fight together."
When Saul and all of Israel heard these words of the Philistine,
they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
This is where David hears the giant speak.
1 Samuel 17:22-24
And David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper, ran
to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.
Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the
Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of
the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So
David heard them.
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him
and were dreadfully afraid.
After David hears Goliath his older brother comes out against
David.
1 Samuel 17:28, 29
Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and
Eliab's anger was aroused against David, and he said, "Why did
you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep
in the wilderness? I know your pride and insolence of heart, for
you have come down to see the battle."
And David said, "What have I done now? Is there not a cause?"
