Another day, another episode! Today on the pod we're joined by
visual artist & textile designer, Gianna Hayes. A name like
Gianna suggests Italian heritage, and yes, Gianna is Italian; her
family are from Napoli, her mum's first language is Italian and
Gianna's nonna was the chef at her mum's Italian restaurant. But,
Gianna is also black. Her dad is black American, and Gianna was
born in Los Angeles and spent the first 13 years of her life living
there. Gianna and I talk about how she navigates being part of two
very distinct cultures, the transition from life in America to
Australia and how creativity is part of her survival and healing
practice. She also tells us how we can use onion skins (yes, onion
skins) to dye fabrics! Happy listening. To keep up to date with
Gianna's art work, including her Black Renaissance series, and to
see her vegetable dyed textiles (you can even purchase one) follow
her on Instagram @gianna.hayes. You can find her free guided
meditation hereStay in touch with Black Birds via Instagram
