In Gail Jones’ ninth novel, the Great Fire of Salonika that broke
out in August 1917 is the backdrop for a drama that weaves
together actual historical figures and four fictional characters.
Through the eyes of these characters, all of whom are enlisted in
the medical services, we witness a very particular and local
tragedy. Jones speaks with Sarah Kanowski about this timely and
powerful antiwar novel.
