Thursday, 11 March 2021, 1 – 2pm A lecture by Christina Cleary,
O’Donovan Scholar, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies where she
will discuss the small number of ascriptions of poems to women, as
well as speeches and dialogues from the mouths of female
characters, in the twelfth-century Book of Leinster (TCD MS 1339).
Although mere interpretations of the female experience through a
male lens, and often far detached from their social reality as
clearly outlined in the law tracts, these expressions attributed to
women provide insights into how medieval Irish society perceived
women and how they expressed themselves. Organised by the
