Alberto Martinez is a professor of History of Science and Math at
University of Texas, Austin. He has written books on the
persecution of scientific heretics by the Catholic Church,
dishonesty in the contemporary media, the ancient roots of
mathematical mysticism, the lost stories of Darwin’s discoveries,
revised the history Einstein’s formulation of relativity, and a
book on the history of negative numbers. We talk to him about the
mythologies built up around scientists and their discoveries,
superstition in physics, the death rattle of inquiry, and what
