George Howard is a podcaster, entrepreneur, organizer, and
citizen archaeologist who runs the Cosmic Tusk blog and organizes
the Cosmic Summit conference on ancient archaeology. He was also
an early proponent of the Younger Dryas Impact hypothesis, which
suggests that at the end of the last glaciation that an enormous
asteroid shattered upon entry into Earth’s atmosphere, showering
North Africa, Europe, and North America in meteoritic fragments.
Proponents of the Younger Dryas impact theory point to numerous
lines of evidence that suggest the event is more than
theoretical. There are molten rocks called tektites, a “black
mat” of charred organic material that encircles the globe, and a
massive extinction event that all correspond to the time and
location of the proposed impact. But the Younger Dryas impact
theory remains controversial. We talk catastrophic history, cold
