Elisabeth Bik is a Dutch microbiologist who has a talent for
identifying duplicated patterns. She turned her attention to the
question of scientific integrity more than a decade ago, and has
since been responsible for the retraction of more than a thousand
papers that have blatant image manipulation in them. We talk to
her about the work of image sleuthing, the nature of science that
induces people to fake data, the impact of rotten data filling
