Dr. Jordan Tishler recently weighed in on how marijuana
dispensaries were doing in the Boston area before the outbreak of
COVID-19. A ‘cannabis recession’ already began in 2019 as many
overnight dispensaries opened to meet earlier demands.
Consequently, demand became met by more competitors. What’s more,
many entrepreneurs did not foresee the obstacles they would
encounter in the form of state regulations, licensing and
requirements. Since marijuana is a ‘schedule one’ substance with
federal prohibitions, banking is not available for businesses. This
means that dispensaries often keep cash on the premises, leaving
them prey to a rash of smash and grab burglaries across legal
