#091 - Matt Roy is a professional photographer based in Miami,
Florida. Over the past 15 years, Matt has built two careers
in health, wellness and fitness: as an action sports and
lifestyle photographer and as a personal trainer.
Matt's fitness career began in 1999 at Crunch.
Shortly after, he was recruited by David Barton Gym, where
he finished his tenure as Head Trainer. In 2005, Matthew
started training private clients. A self-taught
photographer, Matthew began taking photos seriously six years ago
after he broke his ankle.
While recovering, his camera became his connection to sports and
movement. His energetic photos focus on sports like
skateboarding and wakeboarding as well as fitness. Even his
portraits are kinesthetic, capturing large and small movements.
Matthew is captivated by details - whether the play of sunlight
on a skateboard or the burn of a right oblique. He’s
centered in the moment. This philosophy extends to his
clients. No matter their physical abilities, Matthew wants
them to feel balanced, empowered and confident.
Anthony & Josh chat with Miami-based professional
photographer, Matt Roy. Matt shares some adjustments he’s made to
his business since the start of the quarantine, the feeling of
transitioning your hobby into a career, the hardest challenge he
faced while pursuing a career in photography, and what he thinks
separates him from other photographers in the field. After, they
chat about the importance of promoting the authentic version of
yourself and some content trends Matt has seen coming out of the
lockdown. You can follow Matt on Instagram @matt_roy and check
