Cinderella is an ancient story, but the most well-known literary
version is the tale by The Mother Goose AKA Charles Perrault,
first published in the late 1600s. But what does it have in
common with a Whitney Houston and Brandy led Cinderella musical
adaptation from the 90s? In episode 160, Marci & Ako of the
Colored Pages Book Club podcast join Luke & James to discuss
the fairy tale genre staple, revisit a childhood classic, and
laugh about all the weirdness the Brothers Grimm managed to bring
into their version of the story.

Topics: Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella’s puzzling absence
from Disney Plus, some dubious “morals” included in the original,
how best to treat the evil stepsisters, an unexplained fairy
godmother, the value of a fantasy world without racism, the
narrative role of the music in musicals, and the unique
intersection of class, gender, and race. Plus, a final vote on
which was better: the story or the film!
