Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the Duke of York in 1923,
reluctantly joining the royal family. Little more than a decade
later, she was at the heart of the abdicating crisis when her
husband became King George VI. The new king and queen stabilized
the monarchy and inspired the nation during the dark days of
World War II. Then in 1952, devastated by the death of her
husband, Queen Elizabeth shifted from her role as Queen Consort
to Queen Mother, a position she would hold until her death in
2002 at age 101.. Gareth Russell joins us this week to discuss
this remarkable woman and her place in the ever-changing royal
family.
