In this episode of Postcards, I welcome Cadwell Turnbull. author
of the science fiction novel The Lesson. His short fiction has
appeared in The Verge, Lightspeed, Nightmare, and Asimov’s
Science Fiction. The short story “Loneliness is in Your Blood”
was selected for The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy
2018, and the story "Jump" was selected for the Year's Best
Science Fiction and Fantasy 2019. The Lesson was the recipient of
the 2020 Neukom Institute Literary Award in the debut category.

In this episode, we are focusing on his second novel No Gods No
Monsters that I jokingly called an Anarchist werewolf novel. The
first in a series this novel is fantasy, science fiction, and
activist themed with multiple layers No Gods No Masters is a
delightfully powerful and unique piece of work. I would recommend
it for all fans of modern dark fantasy but for the ones that
enjoy deeper political reading, it is a MUST READ.

In this conversation we talk about Cadwell’s origin story, the
differences between writing the first book and this one, the
influence of Leguin and activism in Pittsburgh where he went to
college and writing an anarchist themed monster novel about
discrimination and the changing world. My audio is terrible
something was wrong with my mic, but Cadwell sounds great, enjoy!
