The theme of this episode is writing with Learning Disabilities.
What most of you might not know is that I have dyslexia and a few
other learning disabilities. I have a couple of books published
and have been nominated for a few awards, but I struggled with my
education and was bullied quite a bit as a young person. In my
teenage years, I made a friend in Duncan Barlow who grew up
one state away but our paths were similar. In this episode,
Duncan and I talk about our journeys from the special needs
classroom to published novelists.
Duncan B. Barlow is the author of A Dog Between Us (Stalking
Horse 2019), The City, Awake (Stalking Horse 2017), Of
Flesh and Fur (The Cupboard 2016), and SuperCell Anemia
(2008). He teaches creative writing and publishing at the
University of South Dakota, where he is a publisher at
Astrophil Press and the managing editor at South Dakota
Review. He has also edited for Tarpaulin Sky and The Bombay Gin,
among others.
I first met Duncan long before he was published when he was
a touring musician who played with the classic Louisville
hardcore bands Endpoint, By The Grace of God, and Guilt. He has
also played the Aasee lake, The Lull Account, Good
Riddance, and just released a solo album. A friend
for decades and an inspiration I can’t be more excited to present
this conversation with Duncan about Dyslexia, fighting the
educational system of the late 80s/90s, and our process of
writing novels.
