Becoming pregnant and giving birth are some of the most dangerous things a woman can do in Liberia. According to UNICEF, Liberian women have a one in 12 risk of dying from childbirth. Most of these deaths could be prevented with access to trained midwives, but there’s a dire shortage of them in the country. Recently, a school for midwives in a remote corner of Liberia decided to break from tradition to meet the demand. The World Vision Report's Bonnie Allen has the story. This story originally aired on the World Vision Report. We got it from the Public Radio Exchange.
