Jean A. Stuntz received her PhD in History from the University of
North Texas. In 2001 she joined the faculty of West Texas
Agricultural and Mechanical University where she teaches Spanish
Borderlands, Texas, US Women's, and Mexican American history. Her
first book, Hers, His, and Theirs: Community Property Law in Spain
and Early Texas (Lubbock: Texas Tech University Press, 2005) looks
at the development of married women's property rights in Spain and
how those were brought to Texas by the Spanish. This speech was to
the groups Los Bexarenos, descendants of the original settlers of
San Antonio. Topics include the book, the history of San Antonio,
and some of the myths concerning Hispanic contribution to US
