Twyla Tharp has been that unusual New York dance figure who has
long dabbled in popular culture, largely a result of being
exposed as a kid to lots of movie musicals while working at her
parents’ drive-in theater in California. She studied dance with
such legends as Martha Graham, then formed her own dance company
in the mid-1960s and by 1973 was having the Joffrey Ballet do
numbers to Beach Boys music. She choreographed several Hollywood
films including the dancing horse scene from “Hair,” and in 2001
her Billy Joel-scored production “Movin’ Out” became a Broadway
smash. As you’re about to hear, Tharp, a Tony winner and Kennedy
Center Honoree, has long been friends with Steve Wynn and has
long been enthralled by Frank Sinatra music, so she’s excited to
bring “Sinatra Dance With Me” to the Wynn Las Vegas was easy. It
opened last weekend to an A-minus grade from Mike Weatherford and
with blogger David McKee both liking it and wondering if it’s too
artsy for Vegas audiences.Tharp, however, believes Strip tourists
will understand the show better than show-goers in New
York.
