Fifty years ago clarinetist/saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre formed his influential yet underappreciated trio with bassist Steve Swallow and pianist Paul Bley—the group split after a gig in which they made 35 cents each. The music of Bley’s then-wife, Carla, was central to the group. On this Piano Jazz, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow join McPartland for trio renditions of Carla Bley originals “Ida Lupino” and “Ad Infinitum.”
