In recent months, military action aimed at capturing and killing high ranking Taliban members in Northern Pakistan has resulted in displacement, death and destruction. Last week, the Pakistani government condemned U.S. drone strikes in the region as a violation of State sovereignty. With so much turmoil and the questionable efficacy of armed intervention, how do Pakistanis view their government? Author and professor at Dartmouth Collede, Aqil Shah, helps lay out the terrain and unpack the issue.
And, rebel groups in Eastern Ukraine are reporting shelling in the eastern city of Donetsk. There is one reported fatality. In the backdrop of continued fighting, a convoy with Russian aid supplies has halted as it approaches the border. Mychailo Wynnyckyj, associate professor of Sociology at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, will update us on the rising tensions.
Then, we last spoke with Global Activist, Stacey Chamberlain, in 2010. She is a Chicago-based emergency room physician who decided to go to Uganda to train nurses and physicians and provide access to quality healthcare. She co-founded the Global Emergency Care Collaborative (GECC) to aid people who die unnecessarily from trauma, injuries and illnesses that are easily treatable in the United States. For our Global Activism series, Stacey is back to update us on how the work of GECC has expanded into Kenya and even into Cambodia.
