Israel is ramping up its military offensive on Gaza. Israeli Defense Forces announced it has attacked over 200 sites it claims are linked to the militant group Hamas. Hundreds have been injured and AP reports the number of dead at 41. Gaza based writer, Mohamed Suliman, will tell us why he believes the worst is yet to come. He contributed to the book Gaza Writes Back: Short Stories from Gaza, Palestine.
Then, uncontacted peoples in Peru have been forced across their border into Brazil by illegal logging, according to human rights observers. Brazilian officials say that its indigenous tribes face “imminent” death from the incursion. Fiona Watson from Survival international will tell us about the tribes and the growing conflict between the groups.
And, this week on Global Notes…we reach into the archives and bring you the sounds of the cuica. The cuica is a Brazilian percussion instrument thought by some to have originated in Africa and brought to Brazil by Bantu slaves. The drum sounds like a sorrowful cry. Join Jerome McDonnell and WBEZ’s Tony Sarabia as they hear the cuica performed by Brazilian musician Felipe Fraga. Performing with Felipe are Silvia Manrique, Luciano Antonio and Edinho Gerber.
