The FIFA World Cup is set to wrap up as juggernaut, Germany, takes on Argentina in the final. We’ll talk with soccer contributors, Pavel Yusim and Ahmed Rehab about the finale and Brazil’s collapse, already considered by many, to be legendary.
Then, chocolate prices are on the rise, due to demand and disease lying waste to South American production of cocoa beans. This at a time when chocolate producers are starting to pay attention to activists about the plight of child workers in the industry. Will the economics of this situation help or hurt the effort to eradicate child slavery in chocolate production? We’ll talk with Antonie Fountain, he’s coordinator of the VOICE network of NGO’s and trade unions throughout Europe, working on sustainable cocoa value chains.
And, Chicagoans Ann Avery, and her husband Robert, founded Worldview Education and Care after they witnessed the plight of young people in the Meru district of northern Tanzania. Among many services, the group helps Tanzanians by providing scholarships for child and adult education, including living expenses and medical care. They also run a girls' empowerment program to help struggling and single mothers attend school. For our Global Activism series, Ann and group supporter, Susie Rheault, talk about their work and a program to foster HIV/AIDS awareness through sports.
