Joko Widodo, the governor of Jakarta, has been declared the winner of Indonesia’s presidential election. The loser, Prabowo Subianto, a former army general, has said he’ll appeal the decision to the country’s highest court. He claims there was widespread fraud. Ted Fishman, author of China Inc. and Shock of Gray, joins us to talk about the election results.
Then, Cuba does not protect the right to free speech. The country is also known for its substandard internet access. But Yoani Sánchez, the award-winning human rights blogger best known for her blog Generation Y (Generación Y) , has started 14 and-a-half (14ymedio), Cuba's first independent newspaper in fifty years. Sanchez started blogging under an alias using hotel computers meant for tourists. Today, her blog posts and tweets routinely go viral. We spoke with Sanchez when she was in Chicago to speak before the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, who honored her as their Hart Fellow for 2014.
And, on July 23, 1962, communications were changed forever. This is the day Telstar went into service. Historian John R. Schmidt tells us about the beginning of satellite communications.
Then, this week on Global Notes we bring you the back story and the music of Jerry Dammers’ Spatial AKA Orchestra.The man who started the ska revival group The Specials as well as the whole 2Tone movement is getting renewed attention with his latest project. Jerry Dammers recently played a four hour show with his Spatial AKA Orchestra at London’s Barbican Theatre. It was described as profound, ecstatic and moving by some critics. Radio M and Morning Shift host Tony Sarabia shares sounds from his latest project.
