The Palestinian Authority and Hamas planned to form a unity government. That decision was met by a swift reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said his country would not participate in peace talks with Hamas. We'll discuss the Israeli decision to suspend the talks, for now, with Roey Gilad, Consul General of Israel to the Midwest.
Roshika Deo is a pro-democracy, youth and gender rights advocate from the island country of Fiji. She created the “Be the Change” political campaign to encourage women and young people to embrace civic action. For her work towards democratic chande, social justice and ending discrimination and violence against women and girls, Deo recently won the U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for International Women of Courage. Deo joined us while being hosted in the U.S. by the citizen diplomacy group, WorldChicago.
The Ethiopian Community Association of Chicago (ECAC) will celebrate its 30th anniversary on May 3rd at the Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church. For more information go to ecachicago.org. The organization was started to help provide an array of support services for Ethiopian refugees resettling in the Chicago area. We'll talk with one of the founders and the current executive director, Dr. Erku Yimer.
On April 28, 1789, a mutiny occurred on the British naval ship Bounty. The story is a favorite of Hollywood. Lots of people don't even know that the films have been based on a real incident. We'll get the story from historian John Schmidt.
