Dr. Vandana Shiva started Navdanya as a program of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology (RFSTE) to provide direction and support to environmental activism. In 1984, there was a shift in the practice of agriculture after the Bhopal tragedy where a gas leak killed 25,000 and injured 500,000 people. The chemical came from the Union Carbide pesticide plant which manufactured carabaryl.

In addition to being actively involved in the rejuvenation of indigenous knowledge and culture, Navdanya has created awareness of the hazards of genetic engineering and food rights in the face of globalization. She tells WBEZ's Worldview about her work.
