#5 - Zwischen Pommes und Jok - Aufwachsen in Deutschland

(GER) In Deutschland als Kind (post-)migrantischer Eltern wächst
man zwischen den Kulturen auf. Schon früh bemerkte Joy, dass ihre
Klassenkamerad*innen als "anders" wahrnahm; angefangen beim
Essen, Namen, dem Aussehen und der thailändischen Sprache, hatte
sie das Gefühl, dass ihre Herkunft die Menschen in ihrem Umfeld
irritiert. Auch ihre Oma bemerkte das und wollte lieber “Oma”
anstatt Yaai  (thai für Oma von der mütterlichen Seite)
gerufen werden. Um nicht weiter unangenehm aufzufallen, begann
Joy ihre thailändische Identität zu verstecken. 


Als sie in ihrer Jugend mit ihrer Familie nach Frankfurt/ Main
zog, änderte sich ihre Sichtweise als sie weitere BIPoCs (Black,
Indigenous and People of Color) kennenlernt. Joy hat gelernt,
dass sie stolz und selbstbewusst zu ihrer thailändischen Herkunft
stehen kann, unabhängig von den Meinungen anderer.


Bei THAISPORA reden wir über unsere Kindheit und Schulzeit in
Deutschland, das schwierige Verhältnis zwischen thailändischer
Lebenskultur und dem deutschen Lebensraum, thailändische Popstars
in K-Pop und warum Pako bis heute von Meditation Retreats
traumatisiert ist.

(ENG) In Germany, as a child of (post-)migrant parents, you grow
up between cultures. Early on, Joy noticed that her classmates
perceived her "differently"; starting with the food, name,
appearance, and the Thai language, she felt that her background
puzzled the people around her. Even her grandmother noticed this
and preferred to be called "Oma" instead of Yaai (Thai for
maternal grandmother). To avoid standing out further, Joy began
to hide her Thai identity.


When she moved to Frankfurt/Main with her family during her
youth, her perspective changed as she got to know more BIPOCs
(Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). Joy learned that she
could be proud and confident in her Thai heritage, regardless of
others' opinions.


On THAISPORA, we talk about our childhood and school days in
Germany, the complex relationship between Thai cultural life and
German living space, Thai pop stars in K-Pop, and why Pako is
still traumatized by meditation retreats.
