Avery and Lena, hosts of the 90's Tunes podcast, recently
listened to and reviewed Spacehog's Resident Alien, the debut
album.
Spacehog was a British band formed in New York City in 1994 by
guitarist Antony Langdon and drummer Jonny Cragg. They recruited
Langdon's younger brother Royston Langdon as the singer and
bassist, and Richard Steel on lead guitar. Influenced by glam
rock artists of the 70s, like T.Rex, Bowie, and Queen, they made
a commercially plausible pitch that distinguished them from their
peers. "In the Meantime," the lead single from their first album
Resident Alien, topped Billboard's mainstream rock chart for four
weeks. The band became local celebrities and recurring characters
in the international tabloids. Although the album has great
songs, the record is best remembered for "In the
Meantime."
Despite the success of "In the Meantime," Spacehog is often
considered a one-hit wonder. While their subsequent albums did
have some critical acclaim, they were not as commercially
successful as their debut. The band never achieved the same level
of success as they did with "In the Meantime," and it remains
their most popular and well-known song.
