For most of us, the name Zoe Roth isn’t going to ring a lot of
bells – but “Disaster Girl” on the other hand, just might. One
Saturday morning back in 2005, a four-year-old Zoe went along with
her family to look at a neighborhood house that had been
intentionally set on fire by the local fire department. Zoe
remembers watching the flames engulf the home when her father, an
amateur photographer, asked her to smile for his camera. In the
years since then, “Disaster Girl” -- as the photo has come to be
known -- has not only won a national competition, it’s been edited
into various images of some of history’s worst disasters. But now,
more than a decade since becoming one of the world’s first memes,
Zoe has sold the original photo as a nonfungible token, or NFT, for
nearly half a million dollars! How did she do it? Well, you’re
about to find out!
