Very few of us will ever be lucky enough to become an internet
meme. Sure, sometimes being a meme can decidedly go the wrong way –
just ask Chair Girl – but other times it can open a lot of doors.
Case in point, Big Shaq, or as he’s known out in the real world,
Michael Dapaah. This hilarious comedian had been making comedy
sketches and sharing them on YouTube and Instagram for nearly a
decade before he had his big break in 2017 with his appearance on
Fire in the Booth and his subsequent music video for “Man’s Not
Hot”. Following those back-to-back hits, suddenly the character of
Big Shaq that he originally created for his web series “Somewhere
in London” was far more famous than he ever imagined possible. And
unlike with most internet memes, Michael has discovered a way to
continue to keep his comedy relevant by producing more and more
content -- more music videos, more comedy sketches, and recently, a
brand-new series that sees him shift into the fitness space, a
passion he’s always held from a young age when he wanted to be a
footballer in his earliest years. Michael likes to describe this
series as “Carpool Karaoke” at the gym – and today I’m going to
tell you all about how he arrived at this moment of re-invention.
