Your immune system is tied into your stress response, also known
as your “fight or flight” mechanism. When you are in a state of
fear or anxiety, your stress response gets activated. Your immune
system stops functioning so that your body can direct all of its
energy towards fighting or escaping the threat.

Stress also causes your digestion and cognitive functioning to
shut down. This is actually a survival adaptation. When you’re
running from a tiger, you don’t need to be digesting your food or
thinking analytically. You just need to run and survive.

When you’re constantly thinking and feeling like something is
going to jump out and get you at any moment, then your “fight or
flight” mechanism is turned on all the time. This will
chronically weaken your immune system, chronically lower brain
functioning, and digestion, as these mechanisms are turned off
when your stress response is triggered.
