If we are going to save democracy, we are going to need to reach
across political lines. We will need the support of more than
half of Americans should we have to overthrow a dictatorship. 50%
of the vote may not even be enough to win elections in the
future. We need to reach out to the center whether we like it or
not.
Dom Jones is a minister and community activist who works with
businesses and community leaders in Huntington Beach, California,
to address the problem of homelessness and to advocate for youth
and community services. As an African American Woman in a
conservative community, she organizes across racial lines daily.
As a minister, she seeks to bring communities together.
Dom Jones led a discussion about the following: 1. How do we
build unity across political lines? 2. How does race affect
politics? 3. How can we demystify politics for the masses so
engagement increases? 4. What are the roots of American democracy
as instituted by the "founder fathers" and what were their true
intention? 5. What was the great American Experiment truly about
and how can we achieve these ideals with real collaboration? 5.
How do we uphold the values of freedom for all people, establish
and maintain a true citizenry-led democratic government, and
ensure a better democracy for future generations? 6. How can we
collectively create a people not easily undermined by charlatans
seeking power, money, and influence?
