Coco Schrijber studied at the Rietveld Fine Arts Academy in
Amsterdam, majoring in audiovisual studies. Her first
feature-length documentary First Kill dealt with addiction to
killing. It won the critics' prize at the Netherlands Film Festival
and was selected for the IDFA Competition for Feature-Length
Documentary in 2001. Her film Wonderful World won six international
awards and Bloody Mondays & Strawberry Pies earned her a Golden
Calf award, the Dutch equivalent of the Academy Awards; it was also
the official Dutch entry for the Oscars. In her internationally
praised documentaries, Schrijber is known for approaching her
subjects from unexpected angles and tackling abstract subjects such
as the beauty of war or the upsides of boredom, resulting in
essay-like films with a bite. Her unbridled imagination and
cinematic instinct can result in disturbing stories that turn the
viewer into an uneasy voyeur. Schrijber's latest film How to Meet a
Mermaid has been selected for this year's IDFA Competition for
Feature-Length Documentary.
