On a cold January afternoon, Charles I walked onto a scaffold
outside of the Palace of Whitehall, and he left it in a coffin. The
King of England, Ireland, and Scotland was beheaded by his own
subjects. No one who started the English Civil War, or any of the
Wars of the Three Kingdoms, had expected, planned, or hoped that it
