045 – Flying Fisherman with Chris O’Keefe

Chris O’Keefe is a fly fisherman from Boulder, Colorado. At the
feet of the Rockies, Chris is in the perfect location to branch
out for some alpine trout fishing. Of all the trout species he
gets to pursue, it is the Colorado greenback cutthroat he loves
the most. A species thought to be extinct until a few decades
ago, a thriving population has been re-established from a small
remnant found by researchers. Chris has even participated in a
re-stocking program for the greenbacks. Perhaps it is his love
for that beautiful fish that made another colorful fish catch his
eye. The peacock bass. In this episode, Chris hops on a plane
with fly rod in hand. What follows is an epic road trip for some
peacock bass fly fishing and a shot at that big bucket list
beauty!

Chris grew up salt water fishing in the Laguna Beach area in
California. He eventually gravitated to freshwater and bass,
which is the fish that preoccupied him during his teenage years.
A few years ago, a colleague from work turned Chris on to fly
fishing for trout. When fishing his home waters, it is the
Colorado greenback cutthroat trout that he favors the most. But
his love of bass and beautiful trout made him long to catch the
prettiest bass in the pond. Peacock bass. In this episode, Chris
shares an epic peacock bass fly fishing road trip to South
Florida. I have a feeling he might be back …
