Sharni Layton is one of Australia's most successful athletes. She
wants you to know she's not invincible.
None of us are invincible, no matter what our achievements and
acolades. No matter how well we maintain our physical selves, we
also need to reserve time and space for our mental health, and
seek help where neeeded.
Layton’s career in netball is up there with the best. She’s a
Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and two-time World Cup winner.
In 2019, she made the switch from netball to AFLW, playing for
the Collingwood Magpies. After years of feeling like she never
quite fitted in, Layton says joining AFLW was like coming home.
That switch also came after a lifechanging period earlier on in
2017, when Layton took six months away from netball to overcome
some mental health challenges. Depression was a reality that
crept up on her over the years she spent at the highest level of
netball, and it wasn’t something she took stock of at first.
She speaks with Kate Mills for this latest episode of The
Leadership Lessons, our podcast supported by Salesforce on the
leadership we need for the critical decade ahead.
