The mother/daughter team of Wendy and Sophie McCarthy have been
collectively pushing for women's rights for decades. Wendy, one
of Australia's most recognised and successful activists, has
campaigned on everything from abortion rights (becoming one of
the first to publicly state she had one in the 1970s) to equality
in politics and boardrooms, and early childhood education.
But Wendy concedes that she never thought she'd "have a career"
but would rather have a job -- so she couldn't believe her luck
at graduating from university and going on to become a teacher,
yet still didn't expect it to go beyond that.
For her daughter Sophie, things were very different -- she says
she always expected to have a career, and she could see the
opportunities she had that weren't available to the women who
came before her.
But there's still so much work to be done advocating for women's
rights, which is what makes this team so powerful.
Together, they've participated in campaigns and rallies. And
they've particularly benefited from, and seen the value of,
mentoring, which led them to establish their own mentoring
business.
They speak to host Shirley Chowdhary in this special episode that
will leave you understanding the power of mother-daughter
relationships and just how much work and change can be achieved
in a couple of generations.
The Leadership Lessons is made possible thanks to the excellent
support of Salesforce. It's produced by Agenda Media, also the
publisher of Women's Agenda.
