On August 25, 2020, after the police shooting of Jacob Blake in
Kenosha, Wisconsin, Kyle Rittenhouse, shot and killed two men and
wounded another during confrontations at two locations. He was
armed with a Smith & Wesson M&P15 rifle. Rittenhouse, a
then 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, said he was there to
provide medical aid as he was carrying a medkit. At the first
location, Rittenhouse was pursued by a group, including a Kenosha
resident Joseph Rosenbaum. A gunshot was fired into the air by a
third party, and Rosenbaum lunged at Rittenhouse and attempted to
take his rifle. Rittenhouse then fired four times at Rosenbaum,
who died shortly afterwards. At the second location, Rittenhouse
tripped while fleeing and was kicked by a man. Rittenhouse fired
twice at the man, but missed. Protesters approached Rittenhouse
while he was still on the ground. Then Silver Lake resident
Anthony Huber struck Rittenhouse with a skateboard and struggled
for control of his rifle. Rittenhouse then fired at Huber once,
killing him. West Allis resident Gaige Grosskreutz then
approached Rittenhouse while holding a handgun, and Rittenhouse
shot him once, severing his right bicep. Now he is 18, and being
tried as an adult, facing homicide and several other serious
charges. To help us break down what’s happening in this trial
—from a defense point of view— criminal defense attorney Joe
Rosenbaum (who ironically has the same name as one of the two men
Rittenhouse shot and killed) joins Katrina Daniel for a deep dive
into this fast and deadly crime spree.
