 This is 19nine SHORTS, a fast break-styled lesson
in hardwood history. On their way to the 1996 NCAA
Championship, the Kentucky Wildcats sported one of the most
distinctive uniform kits in modern NCAA basketball history – the
so-called “denim blues.” Though the Kentucky denims now land a
spot on nearly every credible list identifying the top Wildcat
uniforms of all time, the novel look was not so enthusiastically
received upon its debut in 1996. In fact, it was almost
universally panned. In this inaugural edition of 19nine SHORTS,
The Chucker, 19nine’s resident historian, explains how these
now-treasured uniforms came into existence and the
less-than-savory response they received. He also reminds us how,
in the end, none of it really mattered.
