In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and
Arun start a themed month looking back at hidden gems starting
off with the 1990 animated Disney movie The Rescuers Down Under
which is a sequel to the 1977 film The Rescuers.

The movie features a young Australian boy named Cody who
befriends an eagle Marahute who is laying three eggs. Cody meets
up with a poacher named McLeach who is looking for the eagle to
sell it for a high price. He kidnaps Cody for him to reveal
Marahute's location and a mouse calls the Rescue Aid Society in
New York City. Bernard and Miss Bianca take on the mission to go
to Australia to rescue Cody with Bernard wanting to propose to
Miss Bianca, an Australian Outback mouse named Jake as their
brave companion, and the albatross Wilbur going through many
obstacles from a busted back to protecting the eagle eggs from
McLeach.

When the movie premiered, it made only $47.4 million dollars due
to being overshadowed by Home Alone which came out around the
same time. It's considered the black sheep of the Disney
Renaissance films since it came out after The Little Mermaid, but
before Beauty and the Beast and had no musical moments with
memorable songs. Critics have criticized the lack of story, but
praised it due to its beautiful groundbreaking animation with The
CAPS System and epic moments with action and atmosphere compared
to its predecessor. Viewers appreciated The Rescuers Down Under
when it was released on VHS and DVD even if they didn't watch or
remember The Rescuers. It currently has a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
With The Rescuers Down Under seeing as a cult classic, what did
Patricia and Arun think of it? Does it hold up over 30 years
later?
